Should I Have My Home Air Tested For Mold?

Maye Teasdale, Editor

This is the most frequently asked question of people who think their home may have a mold problem. Testing is usually not recommended for homeowners as testing identifies the types of molds that may be airborne but does not identify the cause or source.

The type of mold will not change the methods for cleaning up moldy areas less than three square meters. The cost of testing may be better spent hiring an expert to fix the problem. Air testing is both time-consuming and expensive.

Finally, how the test is interpreted may not be very useful as there are no agreed on "safe levels" of indoor molds. Furthermore, the results will not tell the health risks from the molds.
