How Should I Wash Clothes That Are Moldy or Have a Moldy Smell?

Maye Teasdale, Editor

Of course, if the clothing is non-washable, it will need to be dry-cleaned. However, if it is washable, here are the most effective steps:

  • Wash clothes with your regular detergent.
  • Add a cup of bleach.
  • Make sure the detergent you use does not contain ammonia.
  • Repeat as necessary until the moldy odor is gone.
  • Once you are satisifed that your clothes are free of mold, you should consider storing them in sealed plastic or garment bags to prevent re-contamination.
